Hit Counter Visitors

Driving through Jordan to Petra.  One hump camels.
We flew from Tel Aviv to Eilat and crossed the frontier into Jordan.

Pitstop

Waddi Moussa.  This town is named for the site that Moses (Moussa) hit the rock with his staff to get water.  Muslims include all the Hebrew historical figures in their religion.

Jordanian car with Arabic and English/Indian (smaller) numerals.

Note photo of King Abdullah II.  Photos are everywhere.

King Hussein and King Abdullah II.  The first Abdullah was assassinated because he tried to negotiate with the Jews.  Jordan has a peace treaty with Israel, but has to move carefully.

The last scenes of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade took place in Petra.  I bought Orange Fanta here.

Ali, our guide points to where we will have lunch.  The red dot on the right is the visitor center, where we started our 3 kilometer walk.

At Petra most, if not all structures are carved out of red sandstone.  Caves with carving are for crypts.  Caves without are residences.

Horse carts are raced up and down the canyon with tourists who are jolted up and down on  the rough road.

Picture Indiana Jones racing his horse through this gap.

1st view of the Treasury

The Treasury, the icon of Petra.  It was carved from top to bottom.  The architectural styles changed with who was the conqueror at the time.

Ali, our Jordanian guide.  He was very knowledgeable, friendly and cordial.

Paula, at the entrance to the Treasury

Cliff and Royal Guard

Lots of handicrafts to buy.  Many from a workshop for Bedouins sponsored by the King.

Paula’s camel driver, Mohammed, asked me how many wives I had.  I told him six.  “You must be a very rich man,” he said

Indiana Jane buys a brass coffee carafe.  One of these ladies is Halle Bayless, the other is her cousin.
