The Catholic church at Taos Pueblo, NM
June 19, 2001

The church cemetery at Taos Pueblo, NM.  The crosses leaning against the wall are from the oldest graves.  The crosses were pulled up to make room for the newly dead.

The ruins in the background are from the 19th Century church which was used as a haven for 150  women and children against the US Army.  The US Army used canons to blast the church and kill all 150.  The Indians chose not to rebuild the church.

The Taos Pueblo goes up to 4 stories.  The doors are new.  Originally, families climbed ladders and entered the rooms via holes in the roofs.  The entrances were blocked when the pueblo was under attack.  All of the homes in the pueblo and most pueblos are inherited by the the oldest daughter.  As a result all the businesses in the pueblo are owned by women.  The land in the background -- about 55,000 acres is inherited by the men.  They are the ranchers.
