Cathedral at Acoma Pueblo, NM (6/14/01)
In 1608 the Pueblo Indians revolted against the Spanish colonial church and army.  Later the Spaniards returned and cut off the right foot of men over 25 years old and enslaved all the population.
The cathedral was built mostly by women because the men were crippled.  Those that could work carried 30 foot logs 30 miles for the beams in the ceiling.

Kiva at Acoma
The Pueblo Indians have a religion made of elements of Catholicism and early native religion.  They believe their ancestors came from the ground.

It is believed that the Pueblo Indians descended from the Anazazi.

When the Indians were upset with a priest, they threw him over the edge.  Legend is that the wind caught the priest's robes and he walked away.  The Acomans are busy buying up the adjoining ranches and have nearly doubled the size of the reservation.  Where did they get the money?  Sky City gambling casino.
