Road to Chichen Itza
| We got on the R2 bus and went to Mercado 28.
There we bought tour tickets for Chichen Itza for $38 each. At Club Med they cost $105 each. The tours were the same. Mercado 28 is a bazaar with hundreds of shops. Nick knacks. Ceramic fish. |
|
| We weren't sure that the $38 deal was not a fraud. We
waited 10 minutes after the Club Med bus left and then a van arrived for
us. We were taken to a bus station combined with a folkloric market.
Then we were on the road in a double decker bus with a bathroom. |
|
| Our English speaking guide telling us not to exceed #1 in the toilet.. | |
| Right here a van stopped and we picked up some English tourists. Then "...a su derecha" | |
| First stop was a Spanish colonial town, Valladolid. We didn't get out of the bus. | |
| Next stop was a Mayan Village Co-op store that sold
handicrafts made by the villagers. Each person was assigned a buying
assistant. He walked around with us and explained which cousin made
what artifact.
He told us we would get a discount for speaking Spanish and a bigger discount for speaking Mayan. He was a short guy, like most Mayans. |
|
| More crafts. | |
| The Mayans built the co-op stores because vendors were barred
from Chichen Itza.
In the Mayan village vendors chase potential buyers. |
